Books US schools assign, by Lexile measure

The Lexile Framework places readers and texts on the same scale — a 700L reader is matched to ~700L books. Schools and parents use Lexile to pick books that stretch but don’t frustrate. Each band below lists the assigned-reading canon at that level, with grade range and curriculum coverage per title.

Typical Lexile-to-grade map

Lexile ranges aren’t strict grade boundaries — they describe text complexity, not who should read it. Common reference:

300L–600L
Early-elementary readers (typically grades 2–4)
600L–900L
Late-elementary + middle school (typically grades 4–8)
900L–1200L
Middle school + high school (typically grades 6–12)
1200L+
Advanced high school + college-prep (typically grades 11–12+)
